What is Cornstarch PLA?

You might have heard or read the term PLA before without knowing what it stood for. You probably know it is some kind of plastic and you are not wrong but PLA is much more than that.

cornstarchTraditional plastics are made from petroleum products, are pretty bad for the environment because they take a long time to break down (plastic takes over 700 hundred years to disintegrate) and are getting less and less popular among the consumers for that very specific reason. But technology has come a long way! PLA may sound like plastic but it’s actually a Bioplastic made of cornstarch. I bet you want to hear more about Cornstarch PLA now. Very resistant, everything that is 100% made of PLA is totally biodegradable and compostable. So much for not being Eco-friendly!

Once it is converted to a thermoplastic polyester known as PLA, cornstarch is strong just like regular plastic only it is completely compostable. Though, it can’t withstand temperatures above 115°F – 65°C, and is therefore not suitable for hot food, PLA is a versatile material that can be used in a variety of ways. It is however recommended to use with cold to medium temperature foods.
